Learn how to spin poi today using the following online poi classes and resources, including free options!
Poi is a great flow art prop that a lot of beginner flow artists pick as their first props. This is because poi is a prop that doesn’t require a big commitment. You can make your own practice props at home and can start learning right away through online classes.
Learning poi as a first or second prop is great because you’ll learn strong bases and movements that can be applied and translated to other props.
I have pulled together some online poi programs and free resources so you can start learning how to spin poi today.
By the way, we are not affiliated with any of these programs and do not receive any compensation if you do decide to register.
In-person classes
If you know that following online classes are not for you, I recommend you check your local flow art community in case group or solo classes are offered where you live. A lot of flow and circus artists give classes or workshops.
Certain community centers and circus groups also sometimes give poi or other prop manipulation classes.
Flow art festivals are also great places to attend flow art workshops if you already know how to manipulate other props but I don’t recommend this option for first-time spinners.
Online Programs
Nick Woosley from PlayPoi
Nick Woosley offers not 1 but 2 online poi classes through the Udemy platform at very reasonable prices. I’ve actually learned how to spin poi using this class after it was recommended to me and I have nothing but good things to say about this program and is also my number 1 poi class recommendation. It is really well-built and you only need to press play and follow along.
Nick offers the following two classes but you can also find free resources on his youtube channel and his Playpoi website if you want to see if his teaching method is appropriate for you.
- Poi Dancing: The Beginner Series. Learn and Master the Fundamentals of Poi.
- Beyond the Basics: Intermediate and Advanced Poi Dancing. Journey further down the road to poi mastery.
DrexFactor
Drex is another poi community veteran who offers classes. He offers some free resources on his youtube channel which is very extensive but also offers in-person classes if you are in the Washington DC area.
Drex offers beginners to advance classes on his learning platform which you will need to register (for free) before having access to his list of classes and other resources on his Patreon
Vojta Stolbenko
Vojta is a passionate flow artist that offers weekly poi classes and tutorials on his Patreon. His classes are for poi spinners who have mastered the fundamental movements of poi. He also has some free advanced movements on his youtube channel.
SpinPoi
SpinPoi offers beginner poi lessons and routines mostly focused on wellbeing, but you will need to look somewhere else if you want to advance to an intermediate level.
Free Lessons
Home of Poi offers multiple poi lessons and resources that are accessible for free. However, they are not in order so first-time spinners might get lost trying moves that are too hard too soon. So if you are looking for a specific tutorial that you know the name of then it’s a great resource but you might get lost if you are looking more for a follow-along class.
Youtube
Sacred Flow Arts – LED & Fire Props have a great free playlist on youtube to learn how to spin poi and they also have other tutorial playlists if you want to learn other props.
While this is not technically a course, you can use our Facebook Flow Art Group Masterlist to find poi-specific groups which often provide free tutorials. We do our best to keep this list updated.
Have we forgotten to include your favorite poi spinning class?
